A very common question among sailors. It is one of the most frequent questions received by technical service departments:
“I’ve installed a new engine. When sailing with the engine stopped, should I leave the gearbox in neutral or engage reverse gear?”
The answer is not universal. It depends on the type of transmission (marine gearbox), the specific gearbox model, or the type of propeller installed.
And it is not a minor detail. Choosing the wrong position can affect both sailing performance and the lifespan of the transmission.
When a sailboat moves through the water under sail, the water flow can cause the propeller to rotate freely. This movement is transmitted through:
- The propeller shaft
- The gearbox
- Internal components such as bearings and gears
As a result, this free rotation may cause:
- Premature wear of gears and bearings
- Increased noise and vibrations
- Insufficient internal lubrication
- Changes in hydrodynamic drag affecting sailing performance
For this reason, the gearbox lever position is extremely important.
Before looking at specific cases, one thing must be clear:
✔️ There is no universal recommendation for every installation.
✔️ The manufacturer’s instructions should always be followed.
The correct position depends on the complete propulsion configuration.
For Technodrive marine gearboxes, the recommendation is clear:
✔️ Keep the gearbox in neutral
✔️ Do not engage the gear corresponding to the boat’s sailing direction
This helps avoid unnecessary stress on the transmission components.
When the engine is stopped, internal lubrication conditions are not optimal. For this reason, it is recommended to:
✔️ Start the engine for approximately 15 minutes every 6 hours while sailing
This ensures proper lubrication of the gearbox internals.
Many sailors believe that engaging reverse gear is always the best solution because it stops the propeller from spinning.
However, this is not universally recommended.
Depending on the transmission type, engaging a gear may cause:
- Unnecessary internal loads
- Premature wear
- Damage to gears and bearings
This is why each installation should be evaluated individually.
For the Technodrive SP60 saildrive, recommendations depend mainly on the propeller type installed.
When using a folding propeller, reverse gear is recommended.
