Hydra and Solé Advance: a partnership sailing full speed ahead

Some collaborations are born from a shared drive to move forward, to explore new horizons and to join forces on projects that inspire. The partnership between Solé Advance and the Hydra racing sailboat is a perfect example.

From repowering to the podium at the Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy in Barcelona, this story brings together teamwork, a passion for the sea, and top-level performance.

In this article, we’ll tell you how it all started, what improvements were made on board, and what it’s been like to compete with a renewed technical and human boost.

The origin of the partnership

It all began with the signing of an agreement filled with excitement and shared goals. Hydra Sailing Team, led by Óscar Chaves, is much more than just a racing team – it’s a family brought together by a love for the sea and competition.

The need for a more efficient, reliable and lightweight propulsion system to face a new season was key in their decision.

They chose Solé for the technical reliability, the close-knit support of the team, and the personalised service they were looking for in such a demanding project.

The repowering process

After considering several options, the Hydra team decided to replace its old Yanmar SD60 engine, which was compromising the boat’s performance due to its excessive weight, with a lighter and more efficient model.

They chose the Solé MINI-55, a compact yet robust engine that offers the perfect balance between power, weight and efficiency—ideally suited for racing yachts. The entire propulsion line was also upgraded with the addition of a SPW feathering propeller, improving manoeuvrability and harbour performance.

To facilitate the repowering and optimise the adaptation to the existing engine bed, custom-made mounts were designed and installed—a technical solution that not only simplified the installation, but also ensures greater compatibility with other brands in the market.

The installation was carried out by our official service partner Seamotors, led by technician Quim Mompel, who highlighted:

"It’s been a really rewarding technical challenge. We chose the MINI-55 for its balance between power and weight. The SPW propeller gives us an extra edge in manoeuvrability, and that makes all the difference. Plus, the custom-made mounts made the engine replacement very smooth—something owners really appreciate when facing a repowering."

The result was excellent, as confirmed by Óscar himself:

"We’re very grateful to Solé for their support. The new engine has allowed us to face this season with confidence and peace of mind."

Hydra at the Conde de Godó Trophy: performance and teamwork

From 30 May to 2 June, the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona hosted a new edition of the Conde de Godó Trophy — a landmark event in both national and international sailing.

Over the weekend, the Solé Advance team had the privilege of supporting Hydra, witnessing the starts up close and soaking up the fantastic atmosphere surrounding the regatta.
We experienced first-hand the team spirit, on-board coordination, and camaraderie that define the people behind this project.

Hydra achieved an impressive second place in its category — a result that reflects the team’s hard work, commitment, and outstanding performance.

Passion for the sea, passion for progress

After an intense regatta and a well-deserved result at the Conde de Godó Trophy, we can only thank the Hydra team for placing their trust in Solé Advance to support them in this project.

We would also like to acknowledge the work of Quim Mompel and the rest of the Nautic Seamotors team, as well as the technical and commercial teams at Solé who have been involved from day one.

The racing season continues, and we’re glad to remain part of this journey.
